On the day of Pentecost there was the sound of a rushing wind and visible tongues of fire was seen. These were not recorded on the other two occasions. The new converts prophesied at Ephesus. This is not mentioned as taking place on the day of Pentecost or in the house of Cornelius.

Evidence or Confirming Sign

The Apostles observed one outward sign in the experience of Cornelius and his family was that they spoke with tongues. This physical sign was proof to the disciples that this household had been Baptized in the Holy Spirit. The Biblical records are proof that the physical sign of speaking in tongues through the power of the Holy Spirit confirms that a person has been Baptized in the Holy Spirit.

“Tongues” can be languages known to man (Known Tongue) Acts 2:7-8

“Tongues” can also be a language not known to man (Unknown) I Corinthians 14:3

Purpose for Tongues, I Corinthians 14:2-22

1. Prayer to God I Corinthians 14:2
When a person speaks in another language, he doesn’t speak to people but to God.

2. Self-Edification I Corinthians 14:4

When a person speaks in another language, he helps himself grow spiritually.  He is building himself up and increasing in spiritual knowledge.

3. Edify the Church with Interpretation of Tongues I Corinthians 14:12-13

You should desire to have Spiritual Gifts.  Try to excel in them so that you help the Church to grow.  Therefore, the person who speaks in another language should pray for an interpretation of what he is saying.

4. Intercession I Corinthians 14:14,
Praying on the behalf of others Romans 8:26-27

5. Those Who’ve Yet to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit I Corinthians 14:22

6. Fulfillment of Prophecy I Corinthians 14:21,
    Isaiah 28:11-12

7. Praise God With the Voice of Your Spirit and Mind I Corinthians 14:15-17

People Who had Believed but had not Received the Holy Spirit Acts 8:14-16
“When the people of Samaria heard the Gospel preached, they believed and were baptized in water, but did not receive the Holy Spirit. Now when the Apostles, which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.  Who when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit.  (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were Baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus).”

The Laying On of Hands of the Apostles Acts 8:17

The people of Samaria received Salvation through the ministry of Phillip.  They received the Holy Spirit through the Ministry of Peter and John.  The Bible shows that receiving Salvation and receiving the Holy Spirit are separate experiences.

“Then Laid they their hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost.”

When you Believed, did you Receive the Holy Spirit? Acts 19:1-6

The first question Paul asked was, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?  They answered him, “No, we’ve never even heard of the Holy Spirit.”  Paul asked them, “What kind of Baptism did you have?”  They answered, John’s Baptism.” Paul said, “John’s Baptism was a Baptism of Repentance.  John told people to believe in Jesus, who was coming later.”  After they heard this, they were Baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came to them, and they began to talk in other languages and to speak what God had revealed.”

The Holy Spirit was with the disciples at that time, but not yet in them.  They were filled [Baptized] with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.

Have You Received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Let’s spend some time with Jesus and His field representative, the Holy Spirit.  We get to know Him by spending more time with Him.  We are new creatures in Christ Jesus.  However, God’s desire and plan is that you receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.  Have you received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit since you asked Jesus to come into your heart by faith?  The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is received by faith.  When some people accepted Christ into their life, at the same time they received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  When others received Christ, they did not receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit because they did not know they should.  If you did not receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit when you first accepted Jesus, it’s not too late.  Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit right now!

The Spirit of God is Holy and full of truth.  He will never lie to you.  The Holy Spirit always tells the truth and points you to Jesus Christ, our King and Lord.  You need not be concerned that you will be deceived by the devil and ending up with something that is from the devil.  When you ask your Heavenly Father for one of His promises, such as the Baptism in the Holy Spirit you can be confident that the gift given is from the God of heaven, not Satan.  Remember, Jesus says in Luke 11:13, “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more Shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”  When you ask in faith, the Holy Spirit comes to live in your human spirit.  And when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, as in the book of Acts, you speak in tongues.

The Holy Spirit was jointly sent by God the Father and Jesus to be our helper.  So when you pray in tongues, what actually happens is the Holy Spirit searches your heart and prays through you the perfect will of God (Romans 8:26-27).  You utter secret truths and hidden things which are not obvious to the understanding of your mind (1 Corinthians 14:2 The Amplified Bible).  These things are hidden for us not from us.

Speaking in tongues is speaking in a language that only God understands – even you will not understand it.  This happens as the Holy Spirit prays through you about things you may not know how to pray about (Romans 8:26).

To pray in tongues, please realize that speaking with an unknown tongue is the voice of your heart (the Holy Spirit in your human spirit which was regenerated when you were born-again). Speaking in a known tongue is the voice of the human mind – the soul area (unless one of the vocal gifts of the nine gifts of the Spirit are in operation.)  The Holy Spirit of God will give you utterance, the same as your mind gives you thoughts to speak (Acts 2:4).

To speak in tongues, you must cooperate with the Holy Spirit.  The Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14:14, “For if I pray in an (unknown) tongue, my spirit (by the Holy Spirit within me) prays, but my mind is unproductive” (The Amplified Bible).

This is the power that God gives us through the Holy Spirit in order to do our ministry and everything that we need to do and be successful in life.  I asked the Holy Spirit many years ago, to come into my spirit and fill me.  This is what the Bible says we must do to receive this precious gift.  The Gift of the Holy Spirit is received by faith and revelation according to God’s Eternal Word, not according to the reasoning of our soulish mind.  The Word of God is directed to our regenerated spirit man where the Holy Spirit lives in us.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is very important because it enables you to become a powerful witness of the Gospel message for Christ (Acts 1:8).

1.) Repent and be Baptized by the Holy Spirit Acts 2:38
2.) Believe the promise is for you Acts 2:39
3.) Desire Holy Spirit Baptism John 7:37-39
4.) Accept the Gifts of the Holy Spirit Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:2, 5, 14
5.) Yield to God Isaiah 28:11; Acts 2:4
