The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Every born again believer in Christ has the Holy Spirit, but not every believer (Christian) is filled with the Holy Spirit.  All Christians ought to desire this fullness because God commands it.  “Be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).  It is not a suggestion.  The Bible says, if you will only obey; then I will make you rich.  If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land (Isaiah 1:19 LB).  God has spoken and that settles it.

  1. Understand that God commands us to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).
  2. We must deal honestly with every known sin in our life.  This involves confession and repentance to God (Case Study: David in Psalms 51:1-19).
  3. Being filled with the Holy Spirit involves commitment, renouncing, submission to Christ as Lord over every area of life and walking in faith.
  4. When we are yielded to God and His will, we are filled with the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit controls and dominates us.  Now you can live with full assurance that God has already filled you.

The Holy Spirit came down from heaven and completely immersed [baptized] believers assembled in the upper room of a house in Jerusalem.  They had been waiting for His coming, as they had been commanded to do by Jesus.  Peter said this experience was the fulfillment of God’s promise.

And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh:
Your sons and daughters shall prophesy.  Your old men shall dream dreams.
Your young men shall see visions.  And also on My menservants and on
My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days (Joel 2:28-29).

What Happened When People were Baptized in the Holy Spirit?

1. The Day of PentecostActs 2:2-4
It was not until the day of Pentecost that the Apostles were filled with [Baptized in] the Holy Spirit.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
2. Cornelius and His FamilyActs 10:44-46
Acts 10:44-46 is the record of what happened when Peter preached the Gospel to a man named Cornelius and his family. While Peter yet spoke these words the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the Word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.
3. Paul and the Converts at EphesusActs 19:6
Acts 19:6 describes what happened to the first group of converts at Ephesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them the Holy Ghost came on them: And they spake with tongues and prophesied.
