GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT (cont.)

The Fruit of the Spirit

In between the beginning and ending of the Bible, God continually emphasizes Spiritual Fruit and Fruit bearing.

God’s Divine Purpose is for us to bear Fruit:

Go bring forth Fruit

John 15:5, 16

Believers must reject sin, walk in holiness and obey God’s law.  We must also be planted in the House of God – connected to the Body of Christ

Bring forth Fruit in old age Psalm 92:13-14

Bearing Fruit is a Supernatural Process

Every Branch that Bears Fruit; He purges it. John 15:1-2

God prunes productive plants for the same reason a farmer prunes – to produce more fruit.

Unproductive Plants Luke 13:6-9

The parable of the barren tree in Luke 13:6-9 illustrates how God works continuously and patiently with the unproductive to produce fruit

9 Manifestations of 1 Fruit

God wants to develop in you, the Spiritual Fruit described in Galatians 5:22-23.  It is not “Fruits” (plural), but it is “Fruit” – one Fruit of the Spirit revealed in nine manifestations:

1.) Love 1 Corinthians 13;
Ephesians 3:18-19
Romans 5:5

This supernatural love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

2.) Joy

Nehemiah 8:10; Psalm 51:12
Isaiah 12:3; John 15:11;
Jeremiah 15:16

Supernatural joy that gives spiritual strength.  The Psalmist and the Prophet Isaiah both refer to it as the joy of salvation.

3.) Peace

John 14:27; Romans 5:1;
Psalm 119:165;
Philippians 4:7

This is supernatural peace that is a gift of God.  This is a peace that surpasses all human understanding and it keeps your heart and mind through Christ Jesus.

4.) Long Suffering

Colossians 1:11
Colossians 3:13

The Ability to be longsuffering comes from the Holy Spirit.  It enables you to forbear and forgive others.  You can’t produce it in yourself.

5.) Gentleness

1 Thessalonians 2:7;
2 Samuel 22:36

A mother nourishing her children

1 Thessalonians 2:7

Gentleness is a very important quality that makes you great in God’s sight.

6.) Goodness

Romans 15:14; Luke 6:27
Galatians 6:10

Goodness enables you to do good to those who hate you as well, as to those of the household of faith.  Goodness is also holiness put into practice and results from knowing God.

7.) Faith

Romans 5:2; Hebrews 11:6

Faith is a gift.  The gift of faith is imparted by God through the Word.  But the Fruit of Faith is produced by the Holy Spirit.  The Gift of Faith can move mountains, but the Fruit of Faith is required for daily living.  The Fruit of Faith enables us to walk and live by Faith.

8.) Meekness

1 Peter 3:4; Psalm 37:11;
Psalm 25:9; Psalm 149:4

It is the hidden man of the heart – a meek and quiet spirit – which is greatly valued by God. The Bible declares that the meek will inherit the earth.  Meekness is not weakness, but rather submission to God (Submitting to God’s Mission).

9.) Temperance

1 Corinthians 9:25

Temperance is control over the whole man – spirit, soul, and body – which enables us to live a victorious life.  Temperance means self-control.

The nine manifestations of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit enables you to escape the corruption of the world and to become partakers of the divine nature of God (2 Peter 1:4-8).
